Formal Status

Johannes Hage's House is a social psychiatric residence providing activities and 24-hour care for its residents. This care is provided under the Social Services Act. The type of accommodation I established pursuant to the same act, sections 92-93.
The house contains 60 one-room apartments, and is run as an independent institution in collaboration with Frederiksborg County Council, with whom an operating agreement has been concluded.
The house is run by a board consisting of six members, in accordance with the trust deeds of Johannes Hage's House, dated 25 April 2001.
These are:
  • A chairperson appointed by the board of the Hage family foundation.
  • Two members chosen by Frederiksborg County Council or a body succeeding it.
  • A member chosen by the North Zealand branch of the Danish Medical Association (DADL). Should this organisation cease to exist, this member will be chosen by the county's medical officers.
  • A staff representative elected by the staff of Johannes Hage's House.
  • The managing director of Johannes Hage's House. The chairperson has the casting vote in the event of voting parity. The elected board members are chosen for the duration of the election period of the county council. The staff representative is elected for a period of two years. Johannes Hage's House exists to meet the needs of its residents in the here and now, or attempts to do so to the greatest possible extent.

The house's ethical foundation.

In accordance with the aims expressed in the Social Services Act, the purpose of the house is to offer residents help to achieve a life that is restricted as little as possible by their reduced abilities or other problems.
  • The house aims to provide care, alleviation of suffering, and a good quality of life for each individual resident.
  • The house aims to provide differentiated care that is adapted to the current needs of each individual resident, while also ensuring that the individual has a say or a choice in all off the factors affecting his or her situation.
  • The house aims, via the services it can offer, to prevent residents from having to be admitted or readmitted to psychiatric hospital wards.
  • The house aims to manage its work via a constructive partnership with Frederiksborg County Council, and via mutual understanding and coordination with the referring municipalities and their social service departments.

Johannes Hage's House is the home off each individual resident. The residents should feel this is their home, that this is where they belong, and that it is a place of security and warmth - all the good qualities of a home. With this in mind, we at Johannes Hage's House have appended some of our own regulations for the conduct of our daily work to the aims prescribed by law.
  • We wish to provide our residents with a place in which they can feel secure and are able to realise the kind of life that would like to lead, to the greatest extent possible.
  • We wish to strengthen the residents' social and psychological skills.
  • We wish to create the time and space for self-expression and self-determination, with staff working in small groups together with the residents.
  • We wish to continually improve the personal and professional qualities of our staff, so as to create an open, trusting and reliable atmosphere in the house.
  • We wish to ensure that the social networks of residents and their connections to the outside world remain intact, both in order to preserve a sense of identity and continuity in the lives of residents, and to keep open the possibility of residents later being able to move to another form of residence.
  • The daily work of the staff members and management rest upon a set of common, agreed values.
  • Johannes Hage's House is a residential facility whose purpose is to provide services for persons with physical or mental disabilities.
  • These services are supplied on an individual basis and are adapted to the current needs of individual residents.
  • In order to ensure the greatest possible quality of life for residents, it is important:
  • that we meet each other as equal human beings,
  • that each individual carries out his or her work with re-spect for existing regulations,
  • that each individual shows a high degree of responsibility,
  • that the atmosphere is one of confidence, honesty and openness between individuals.

Certain rules have been adopted to govern daily life in the house, as well as a set of house regulations, which is a necessity in an institution where so many people live and work. All of this springs from the aforementioned unreserved desire for Johannes Hage's House to be a home. Among the consequences of this is the fact that residents and staff members are to be regarded as equals in their daily life, and that any problems that may arise should to the greatest extent possible be solved by residents and staff acting together, and through dialogue.
Every resident of the house should be made to feel that he or she is appreciated, wanted and indispensable; without residents, there would be no Johannes Hage's House.
The personnel policy of the house and its policy with respect to contact with other relevant persons, be they relatives, official bodies or others, are formulated in close accordance with this aspiration.
Expectations are a central aspect to all of this, be they expectations with regard to the other residents and staff or to the vicissitudes of daily life. It is and will remain the continuous aim of the board, management and staff of Johannes Hage’s House to preserve such expectations as part of the
quality of life of the house in all its aspects.
Each resident is allocated a permanent contact person and a secondary contact person from amongst the staff. These contact persons work in teams and in interdisciplinary co-operation with, for example, the evening and night shift personnel, the service group (gardener, porters, laundry personnel), the activities group, general practitioners and psychiatrists, etc.
Each section contains section managers, nurses, nursing aids, social and health assistants, assistant nurses, social workers and service staff.
Each section has a permanently allocated psychiatric consultant who is at the disposal of the section for eight hours every week.

Families policy.

Families can expect of Johannes Hage's House:
  • That there will be a good level of cooperation and positive dialogue between the resident's family and the staff at Johannes Hage's House, and that Johannes Hage's House will provide the best pos-sible care, as well as stimulating activities, for the resident.
  • That it will be possible to discuss matters with the contact person if the family should feel that the care provided, etc., does not sufficiently meet the needs of the resident.
  • That staff will be attentive to the needs and the resources of individual residents.
  • That staff will listen in an open-minded and positive way to the resident's family and will give concrete answers to any questions they may have, that mutual respect will naturally be shown, and that professional confidentiality will be respected.
  • That they will be provided with a presentation of the contact person and a secondary contact person, both initially and whenever changes are made.
  • That the relationship between the contact person and the family member(s) can be discussed with the section management, should this relationship prove unsatisfactory.
  • That the contact person will provide helpful replies to questions regarding such practical matters as clothing, furniture, home visits, and the formulation of a care and activities plan.
  • That they will be informed of any changes in the health of the resident, if necessary via a doctor or psychiatrist, provided that the resident gives his or her consent to this.
  • That families will be regarded as a resource who are willing to offer help in connection with their relative.

Johannes Hage's House expects of residents' families:
  • That they will be prepared for problems at the beginning. It will be a new experience for both the family and the resident.
  • That they will talk about the questions they have and the uncertainty they must naturally feel as relatives.
  • That they will ask all the relevant questions. There is no such thing as a "stupid" question.
  • That they will be prepared to cooperate positively with the contact person.
  • That they will be prepared to accept changes to the resident's accommodation for the purpose of ensuring staff safety.
  • That they may be called upon as a resource to help formulate a care and activities plan.
